Verse #003 of 220

Dearly beloved brethren, as the evening shadows lengthen and we turn our hearts heavenward in this sacred hour, let us ponder the tender words of Genesis: "Have no fear! This time, too, you have a son." Spoken by the midwife amid Rachel's bitter pangs, these words pierce the veil of ancient sorrow at the birth of Benjamin, the son of Jacob's right hand. In the days of the patriarchs, Jacob had returned from Padan-aram, renewing the covenant at Bethel where he had once dreamed of ladders to heaven. There Rachel, long barren, conceived the child who would cost her life. The historical trial of childbirth in those times carried mortal dread, yet the midwife's voice carried divine assurance, transforming fear into hope as the infant emerged from death's shadow. The blessed St. Augustine, in his discourses on the trials of the fathers, sees here the soul's own labor: barrenness yields to fruitfulness only through suffering, prefiguring how the Church is born from Christ's pierced side. St. John Chrysostom, preaching on Genesis, reminds us that God permits such pangs not to destroy but to reveal His mercy, renaming sorrow into blessing just as Jacob changed Benoni to Benjamin. From the rich treasury of the Fathers collected in the Catena, we learn that this moment echoes the promise of new life conquering death, urging the faithful to cast aside fear. In our own evening trials, when anxieties press like labor pains, the same voice calls: have no fear, for the Son is given. Let this ancient assurance settle upon your hearts tonight, beloved, that in every travail the Lord brings forth life. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #003of220 #Catholic
