Verse #218 of 220

Beloved brethren, as the shadows of evening gather around us in this sacred hour, let us turn our hearts to the words of divine wisdom: 'In the time of their visitation the righteous will shine.' These verses from the Book of Wisdom, composed in the Hellenistic age for the faithful dispersed in Alexandria amid trials and scorn, speak not merely of future glory but of God's intimate care for those who endure. The author, drawing from the spirit of the prophets, recalls how the just, tried like gold in the furnace, emerge radiant when the Lord visits His people in mercy and judgment. In the days of the early Church, when persecution pressed upon the faithful from every side, these words echoed in the hearts of martyrs and confessors. St. Cyprian of Carthage, writing amid the Decian persecution, reminded his flock that the visitation of the Lord transforms suffering into splendor, much as the three youths shone unscathed in Nebuchadnezzar's furnace. The righteous do not fade into obscurity; rather, their light breaks forth when the world least expects it, illuminating the darkness of unbelief. Drawing from the treasury of the Fathers preserved in the Catena, we hear Origen teaching that this shining is no earthly acclaim but the very reflection of divine glory granted to those purified by affliction. St. Augustine, in his homilies on the resurrection, echoes this truth: the visitation is both the coming of Christ in the flesh and His return in power, when the saints, like stars in the firmament, shall dazzle the nations. The historical witness of the Church bears this out, for in times of trial the blood of martyrs became seed, and their memory shone brighter than any imperial throne. My children, let not fear grip your souls this night. The same God who visited His people in Egypt and Babylon visits us still through the sacraments and the indwelling Spirit. Live justly, love mercy, and walk humbly, that when the hour of visitation arrives, your light may join that heavenly choir. For the righteous do not merely endure; they shine with the uncreated light of the Eternal Word. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #218of220 #Catholic
