Verse #209 of 220
Beloved brethren, gathered in the quiet of this evening hour, let us turn our hearts to the words of the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans: 'Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.' These words, drawn from the ancient song of Moses in Deuteronomy, resound across the ages as a call to unity in the one true faith. In the days when Paul penned this epistle to the church in Rome, the world was divided between Jew and Greek, circumcised and uncircumcised, each holding to their own customs and fearing the other. Yet the Apostle, inspired by the Spirit, reveals the mystery long hidden—that the Gentiles, once strangers to the covenants of promise, are now invited to share in the joy of Israel’s God.
As St. John Chrysostom expounds in his homilies on Romans, this rejoicing is no mere outward cheer but a profound participation in the divine economy, where the wall of partition is broken down by Christ’s cross. The Gentiles, grafted into the olive tree of Abraham’s faith, rejoice not apart from but alongside the chosen people, fulfilling the prophecy that all nations would bless themselves in the seed of the patriarchs. St. Augustine, in his reflections on the Psalms and epistles, further illumines this truth: the Gentiles’ joy flows from the same fountain of grace that nourished the fathers of old, transforming fear into filial love and division into harmony.
Consider the historical moment, dear children of the Church. In those early centuries, as the Gospel spread from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth, believers faced persecution and misunderstanding. Yet the Fathers of the Church, drawing from the Catena of sacred tradition, saw in this verse a foretaste of the catholic unity we cherish. Origen notes how Moses’ call to rejoice anticipates the Church’s embrace of all peoples, while Ambrose teaches that such joy silences the murmurs of envy between brothers in faith. We, too, in our time, must cast aside the anxieties that divide us—fears of the stranger, doubts of inclusion—and instead lift our voices in shared praise.
Let this evening meditation sink deep into your souls. Rejoice with His people, for in Christ we are one body, one spirit, heirs to the same promises. As the sun sets and shadows lengthen, remember that our joy is not of this world but anchored in the eternal Word. May the Holy Spirit kindle in us a flame of charity that unites all nations under the gentle yoke of the Lord.
