Verse #164 of 220

Biblical encouragement image
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Beloved brethren, as the evening shadows gather and the faithful assemble in quiet reflection, I speak to you from the ancient tradition of the Church, expounding the words of the prophet Isaiah: "I will greatly rejoice in the LORD... for he has clothed me with... garments of salvation..." These verses arise from the post-exilic hope of Israel, where the prophet envisions the anointed one proclaiming liberty and restoration after the desolation of Babylon. Historically, Isaiah 61 captures the jubilee imagery of divine reversal, turning mourning into joy and nakedness into adorned splendor. The Early Church Fathers interpreted this clothing as the very mystery of Christ. St. Jerome, in his commentaries, sees the garments as the baptismal investiture, fulfilling the promise that God Himself covers the shame of sin with His own righteousness. Likewise, drawing from the patristic chain in the spirit of the Catena Aurea, Origen teaches that the robe signifies the soul's union with the Word, while St. Augustine in his homilies on the Psalms declares that to be clothed in salvation is to put on the new man, created in true holiness after the image of Christ. This is no earthly fabric but the seamless tunic of the Crucified, woven from above. In the early centuries, this truth was lived in the catechumenate. The newly baptized emerged from the font and received the white garment, a sign of the resurrection life, as St. Cyril of Jerusalem instructed his flock in Jerusalem. St. John Chrysostom, preaching in Antioch and Constantinople, exhorted the faithful to keep this robe unstained by returning to worldly vices, for the rejoicing of the prophet is ours in the Eucharist and the hope of glory. Thus, on this evening, let the words sink deep: fear not the darkness, for the Lord has arrayed you in garments of salvation. Rejoice greatly in Him who turns exile into homecoming and sin into sanctification. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #164of220 #Catholic
