Verse #128 of 220

In the hushed reverence of this evening hour, beloved brethren, as the faithful gather beneath the flickering lamps of the assembly, we turn our gaze to the sacred words spoken by our Lord upon the waters: "It is I. Do not be afraid." These words, preserved in the Gospel of Saint John, chapter six, verse twenty, resound with the authority of the eternal Word made flesh. Consider the historical moment. After the miraculous feeding of the five thousand, the disciples set sail across the Sea of Galilee as darkness fell. A fierce storm arose, tossing their vessel amid the waves. In the fourth watch of the night, as the early Church Fathers remind us, Jesus approached walking upon the sea. The apostles, gripped by terror, mistook Him for a phantom. Yet His voice pierced the tempest with divine clarity. Saint John Chrysostom, in his homilies on Matthew and John, explains that the Lord permitted the storm to intensify their longing and reveal His power over creation itself. The sea, symbol of chaos and the nations' tumult, submits to the Creator who formed it. As the Catena Aurea gathers, Chrysostom notes how Christ comes not at the first watch but later, teaching patience in trial and the reward of persevering faith. Saint Augustine, in his Tractates on John, sees here the Church herself, the barque of Peter navigating the storms of persecution and heresy in the early centuries. When the Lord declares "It is I," He invites recognition amid fear. The disciples' cry becomes our own prayer: the presence of the risen Christ dispels illusion and grants peace that the world cannot give. In the age of the martyrs, these words fortified those who faced lions and flames, knowing the Lord who calmed Galilee could sustain them through death. Let us, in this evening reflection, hear Him speak to our own tempests of doubt and anxiety. Fix your eyes upon Him who draws near, and be not afraid. #FearNot220 #FearNotUNPLUGGED #128of220 #Catholic
