Verse #074 of 220
Beloved brethren, as the shadows of evening gather and we turn our hearts toward the sacred Scriptures in this quiet hour, let us meditate upon the tender words of the prophet Isaiah: 'Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.' These words, spoken in the midst of Israel's Babylonian captivity, echo across the centuries as a divine summons to courage amid exile and trial.
In the historical context of the sixth century before our Lord, the chosen people languished far from Zion, their temple in ruins and their hopes dimmed by foreign chains. Yet the Lord, through His prophet, reminds them that redemption is not a distant dream but an accomplished reality in the divine will. As the great Origen taught in his homilies on Isaiah, this redemption prefigures the true liberation wrought by Christ, who ransoms us not with silver but with His own precious blood poured out upon the Cross.
St. John Chrysostom, in his commentaries preserved within the Catena Aurea tradition, expounds that to be called by name signifies an intimate knowledge and possession by God. No longer are we strangers or slaves to fear, for the Creator who formed us in the womb has stooped to claim us as His own. This personal address banishes the terror that arises from sin and separation, inviting us instead into the freedom of adopted children.
Drawing from the wisdom of St. Augustine in his expositions on the Psalms, we see that fear itself is not eradicated but transformed. The holy fear of the Lord replaces the dread of worldly loss, anchoring the soul in the promise of eternal redemption. In the Early Church, the faithful heard these verses proclaimed during the vigils, where the darkness of night mirrored the soul's struggles, yet the light of Christ pierced through, just as the dawn follows the long Babylonian night.
Thus, my children, as we conclude this evening reflection, cast aside every anxiety. The Lord who redeemed Israel and fulfilled all in His Son now redeems you. Rest in His embrace, for you are His, and no power can snatch you from His hand.
