Fear Not 220

Beloved brethren gathered here in the twilight of this sacred evening, let us hearken to the words of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as set forth in the holy Gospel of Luke: "Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows." These words, uttered in the region of Galilee during the Lord's public ministry, serve as a profound reminder of divine providence amidst the storms of life. In the biblical context, our Savior was instructing His disciples on the eve of their mission, forewarning them of persecutions yet assuring them of the Father's watchful eye. The sparrow, a creature of little worth in the markets, falls not without His notice, and the hairs of our head are all numbered. This teaching draws from the rich tapestry of Old Testament wisdom, where God's care for creation is celebrated. The Early Church Fathers, whose commentaries are preserved in the Catena Aurea, offer illuminating insights. St. John Chrysostom exhorts us that if God provides for the birds of the air, how much more for rational beings destined for eternal life. St. Augustine reflects that this knowledge of our value casts out fear, for perfect love has no room for dread. In the catacombs and assemblies of the primitive Church, these verses fortified the faithful against the terrors of imperial edicts. Thus, let us cast aside our anxieties and rest in the arms of our loving Father, who sent His Son for our redemption.
