Fear Not 220

Beloved brethren gathered in the Lord's house this evening hour, let us meditate upon the sacred words from the epistle of Saint Paul to the Galatians, chapter five, verse twenty-two: the fruit of the Spirit is joy. In the days when the Apostle wrote to the churches of Galatia, the faithful were embroiled in debates concerning circumcision and the keeping of the Mosaic Law. Paul, inspired by the Holy Ghost, contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruits of the Spirit, urging believers to walk in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free. This joy is not mere emotion but a steadfast virtue, cultivated by the indwelling of the Divine Spirit. The holy Fathers of the Church have richly commented upon this passage. Saint John Chrysostom, in his series of homilies, explains that joy is the soul's response to the presence of God, untroubled by external afflictions. Likewise, the great Augustine of Hippo in his treatises on grace describes how this spiritual joy surpasses all earthly delights, being a foretaste of the beatific vision. From the Catena Aurea we learn of Jerome's insight that joy springs from a clear conscience and the hope of eternal life. Origen too notes its power to sustain the soul amid trials. As the sun sets and we prepare for the night's rest, let us reflect on how this fruit manifests in our daily lives. It enables us to rejoice in the Lord always, as the Apostle elsewhere commands. In times of persecution, the early Christians displayed this joy, singing hymns even in dungeons. Thus, we too are called to unplug from worldly anxieties and abide in the Spirit's consolation. Through prayer, fasting, and the reception of the holy sacraments, may this joy grow within us, transforming our hearts and communities.
