Fear Not 220

Beloved brethren in Christ, as the shadows lengthen this evening and we turn our hearts from the clamor of the world, let us ponder the sacred words of the psalmist: 'You show me the path of life... in your presence there is fullness of joy' (Psalm 16:11). These verses, sung by David amid his trials, echo through the centuries as a beacon for souls weary of earthly strife. In the days of old, when Saul pursued the anointed king through the wilderness, David found no refuge in caves or strongholds, but only in the Lord who reveals the way of life. The path he speaks of is no mere earthly trail, but the road of righteousness leading through death to resurrection glory. Drawing from the wisdom of the Early Church Fathers, we hear Saint Augustine expounding this psalm in his Enarrations, seeing in it the very voice of Christ our Lord, who alone trod the path of life without deviation. Augustine teaches that the fullness of joy is not in fleeting pleasures but in the eternal presence of God, where the saints behold the face of the Father. Saint John Chrysostom, in his homilies, reminds us that David’s song prefigures the joy of the redeemed, a joy the martyrs tasted amid the arenas, their hearts fixed on the presence that no persecution could steal. The Catena Aurea gathers these voices, linking the psalm to the Gospel promises where Christ declares Himself the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In the early Church, amid persecutions and the silence of the catacombs, these words sustained the faithful. They unplugged from the idols of Rome and found the true path in the breaking of bread and the prayers. So too must we, dear children, set aside the distractions of our age and seek the presence where joy is made complete.
