Fear Not 220

Beloved brethren in Christ, as the evening shadows gather and the day yields to night, let us ponder the ancient words of the prophet Isaiah in the fortieth chapter: 'Fear not to cry out...' Spoken amid the desolation of exile, these words summon Zion to ascend the high mountain and herald the good news with unyielding strength. The people of Judah languished under Babylonian chains, their holy city razed and their hopes dimmed, yet the Lord commands a bold proclamation to the cities: 'Behold your God!' This is no gentle murmur but a clarion call echoing across the wilderness. In its historical setting, Isaiah forty offers comfort to a captive nation, foretelling the return and the coming of the Lord whose arm rules with power. The herald must lift the voice without fear, for the glory of the Lord shall be revealed. St. Jerome, in his commentary, interprets the mountain as the exalted Church from which the Gospel resounds to all peoples, urging the faithful to proclaim Christ fearlessly amid worldly trials. The Early Church Fathers enrich this message profoundly. St. Augustine, in his homilies on the psalms, teaches that fear silences the soul, yet divine grace bids us cry out the mercies of God. Like the apostles who faced persecution, we must declare the truth without trembling. The Catena Aurea gathers voices such as St. John Chrysostom, who speaks of the fearless heralds announcing salvation, and Origen, who sees in this cry the eternal invitation to recognize the Shepherd gathering His flock. In this sacred evening hour, we too are called to that high mountain of faith. Fear not the darkness or the scoffing world, for the Lord comes with might and His reward follows. Let the Church militant lift its voice in prayer and witness, saying to every weary heart, 'Behold your God!'
