Fear Not 220

Beloved brethren in Christ, as evening shadows lengthen and we gather in spirit around the eternal Word, let us attend to the ancient command from Deuteronomy: '...do not be afraid of them...' Moses addressed these words to Israel poised at the threshold of Canaan, confronting nations with horses, chariots, and numbers far exceeding their own. Historically, this exhortation prepared a people delivered from Egyptian bondage for holy war, reminding them that victory rests not in military might but in the covenant God who fights for His own. St. Augustine, in his sermons on the Psalms, unveils the deeper spiritual sense: these earthly enemies symbolize the powers of sin, the devil's hosts, and the allurements of the world that besiege the soul. To fear them is to doubt the Lord who parted the Red Sea and toppled Jericho's walls. Origen likewise, in his homilies on Joshua, sees the conquest as the Christian's battle against vice, where faith in Christ renders the enemy impotent. The Catena Aurea preserves Chrysostom's insight that the early martyrs, facing imperial legions, embodied this fearless trust, their blood watering the Church's growth. In our own day, dear children, we too encounter chariots of anxiety, numbers of opposition, and the clamor of unbelief. Yet the same God who thundered at Sinai speaks: do not be afraid. Cling to the sacraments, the Scriptures, and the communion of saints. As the Fathers teach, perfect love casts out fear, for He who is with us is greater than all who oppose us.
