Fear Not 220

Beloved brethren, gathered in the quiet of this evening hour, let us turn our hearts to the words of our Lord as recorded by the blessed Evangelist Matthew: 'Take courage; it is I. Do not be afraid.' These words, spoken amid the raging tempest upon the Sea of Galilee, echo through the ages as a divine summons to trust. In that sacred moment, after the miracle of the loaves, the disciples found themselves tossed by contrary winds, their vessel far from shore. The night was dark, the waves fierce, and their hearts, like ours, troubled by the unseen perils of this fleeting world. St. John Chrysostom, in his homilies on Matthew, reminds us that the Lord permitted this storm not to destroy but to reveal His power and to strengthen their wavering faith. For when the Savior approached, walking upon the waters as though upon dry land, He did not merely calm the sea but first addressed the fear within. 'It is I,' He declares—the same 'I AM' who spoke to Moses from the burning bush—affirming His divinity amid human frailty. The holy Fathers of the Catena Aurea, drawing from Augustine and others, teach that this scene prefigures the Church herself, buffeted by persecutions yet upheld by the unseen presence of Christ. Consider, my children, how Peter, bold yet faltering, stepped forth at the Lord's command. His momentary doubt caused him to sink, yet the hand of mercy lifted him. So too does fear assail us in our daily trials: the anxieties of provision, the shadows of illness, the tempests of doubt. The Early Church, facing Roman arenas and hidden catacombs, clung to these words. St. Jerome notes that true fearlessness arises not from absence of danger but from recognition of the Lord's nearness. In the stillness of night, when all seems lost, He draws near, bidding us to cast aside terror and fix our eyes upon Him. Thus, let this verse resound in your souls tonight. Do not be afraid, for the One who commands the winds and waves abides with His flock.
