Fear Not 220

Beloved brethren in the Lord, as the evening shadows lengthen and we gather in spirit around the sacred Scriptures, let us ponder the words of the prophet Isaiah: "Fear not, be not troubled..." (Isaiah 44:8). In the days of the Babylonian exile, when Israel trembled before the idols of the nations and the might of foreign kings, the Lord spoke through His servant to remind His people of His eternal sovereignty. This verse emerges from a context where God declares Himself the first and the last, the only true God who has foretold events from ancient times, calling Israel as His witnesses against the vanity of graven images. The Early Church Fathers, in their profound meditations preserved in the Catena Aurea, saw here not merely a historical rebuke to idolatry but a timeless exhortation against the fears that assail the soul. St. Augustine, in his homilies on the Psalms, echoes this by teaching that true fearlessness arises from recognizing God alone as our refuge, for He who formed the heavens and the earth has no rival. Likewise, St. John Chrysostom, in his commentaries on the prophets, urges the faithful to cast aside the anxieties of the present age, for the Lord has declared His purposes from the beginning, rendering all other powers powerless. As the sun sets on this day, dear children of the Church, let the words of Isaiah dispel the troubles that weigh upon your hearts. The God who spoke to the exiles speaks to us still through the apostolic tradition, assuring us that we are His witnesses to the one true faith. In the face of worldly tumults and the allure of false securities, stand firm, for there is no God beside Him.
