Fear Not 220

Beloved brethren, as the shadows of evening gather around us, let us ponder the sacred words of the Psalmist in Psalm 96: "Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice." These verses arise from the historical moment when King David brought the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem, a procession marked by music, dance, and universal praise. The psalm calls not only Israel but all creation to acknowledge the Lord's sovereignty, contrasting the living God with lifeless idols of the nations. The Early Church Fathers, drawing deeply from this text, saw it as prophetic of the Incarnation and the spread of the Gospel. St. Augustine, in his Enarrations on the Psalms, teaches that the heavens rejoice because the Word has descended from above, while the earth rejoices in receiving its Savior. He links this to the apostolic mission, where the message of salvation reaches the Gentiles, fulfilling the psalm's universal call. From the Catena Aurea we hear echoes of St. John Chrysostom, who exhorts the faithful that true rejoicing demands lives of virtue and detachment from worldly vanities. The earth rejoices when human hearts turn from false gods to the one true Lord; the heavens rejoice when angels witness the conversion of souls. In the early Church this psalm resounded in the liturgy as a foretaste of the eternal praise that awaits the redeemed. Thus, my children, let this evening meditation stir us to join creation's song.
