Fear Not 220

Beloved brethren, as the shadows of evening gather and we assemble in the quiet of this sacred hour, let us meditate upon the divine words spoken to Isaac: "I am the God of your father Abraham. You have no need to fear, since I am with you." In the book of Genesis, we find Isaac dwelling in Gerar amid famine and the threat of foreign powers, retracing the steps of his father Abraham yet facing the same perils of scarcity and suspicion. The Lord appears to him by night, not to issue new commands but to reaffirm the ancient covenant, promising fruitfulness and protection in the very land where human strength falters. The fathers of the early Church, those luminous voices who guarded the deposit of faith, have expounded this scene with profound insight. St. John Chrysostom, in his homilies on Genesis, observes that God's self-identification as the God of Abraham serves to anchor Isaac's confidence in the continuity of divine fidelity across generations, teaching that fear dissolves when we recall how the Lord has already proven trustworthy to our forebears. Likewise, drawing from the Catena Aurea, we hear St. Augustine explain that this nocturnal vision reveals the interior presence of God, who sustains the soul even when external circumstances echo the wilderness wanderings of the patriarchs. Consider further, dear children of the Church, how Isaac's obedience in digging again the wells of his father—wells that the Philistines had filled—mirrors the spiritual labor required of every believer. Origen, in his commentaries, likens these wells to the living waters of Scripture and the sacraments, sources of life that hostile forces seek to obscure yet which faith restores. In the age of persecutions, when the early Christians endured exile and trial, this assurance became their bulwark: the same God who accompanied Abraham through Canaan and Isaac through Philistia walks with the Church, the true seed of promise, through every age of uncertainty. Thus, let not the heart be troubled by the famines of the spirit or the threats of the world. The Lord who spoke these words to Isaac speaks them anew to us this evening, inviting us to cast aside fear and abide in the peace of His abiding presence.
