Verse #189 of 220
Beloved children of the Church, hear the voice of the Apostle as it echoes from Patmos through the ages. In the days when the faithful endured the fires of persecution under the empire's iron hand, Saint John beheld this vision not as a distant dream but as the sure promise of God. The marriage of the Lamb has come, and the bride has made herself ready. This is no mere earthly union but the eternal covenant between Christ and His Church, foretold in the prophets and fulfilled in the blood of the martyrs.
The Early Fathers saw here the consummation of all history. Saint Augustine reminds us that the Church, washed in the waters of baptism and adorned with the virtues of faith, hope, and charity, stands as the spotless bride. In the Catena of the ancients, we read how the Lamb who was slain now reigns, gathering His own into the heavenly bridal chamber where sorrow is no more. The rejoicing of which John speaks is not the fleeting joy of this world but the exultation of those who have overcome by the word of their testimony.
Let us therefore cast aside every garment of sin and clothe ourselves in the fine linen of righteousness. The glory belongs to Him alone who has called us from darkness into His marvelous light. As the early Christians gathered in the catacombs to celebrate this mystery, so we too lift our voices in hope, knowing that the wedding feast awaits those who remain faithful unto the end.
